The Clap
Submitted by: Lainey     Borrowed from or inspired by: It might be from Genki English...or a drinking game.     Date added: 10/06/09   Edited by: Joyce P. Le

Outline: Students practice forming sentences in this easy-to-learn clapping activity.

Materials Needed:
  • Action flashcards - not included.

Procedure:
  1. Teach students the target grammar points, "I like to (action)."
  2. All the students sit in a circle with one flashcard in the middle, for example - run.  One student starts the game by saying I”. Going counter-clockwise, the next student says, “like”, and the next student says, “to”, and the next student says, “run”.  However, the fifth student doesn’t say anything, instead, the entire class claps once.
  3. Then, starting with the sixth student, repeat the process.  When it reaches the tenth student this time, everyone claps twice.
  4. The chain of “I-like-to-run” (clap), “I-like-to-run” (clap clap), “I-like-to-run” (clap clap clap) continues around the circle until someone messes up (forgets how many claps there should be and either claps when they should have started at 'I' again or vice-versa).
  5. The student who makes the mistake takes the flashcard and says the target sentence three times.  Then, they replace the flashcard.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Use this game to practice phrases with students after they have learned some verbs.  The students should already be familiar with the verbs and the goal of this lesson is for them to feel comfortable with longer phrases by realizing that it is made of smaller words.
  • Before each round, go through the phrase three times with the new vocabulary word.
  • Start with a different student for each round to ensure not the same student gets stuck with the same word or clapping.

Variations:

  • Turns the verb into a negative: “I don't like to run.”
  • Teams: Students work in teams but sit separately in the circle. At the end of the game, the teams with the least amount of cards win.

Cautions:

  • Don't let the students pre-count what number they are.  This defeats the purpose of the game.
  • Make sure you remember how many claps the class is on.
  • This game is good for at most 20 minutes.
  • Don't punish for English errors at the beginning of the game.  Wait until they get used to the phrase.

The Clap

概要: 生徒は簡単な拍手ゲームをしながら文章を作ることを練習します

必要な教材:

  • 動作のフラッシュカード

手順:

  1. 生徒に"I like to (動作)"という文法を教える
  2.

I don't like to run."
  •
    グループで他のチームと競争する:最後に一番少ないフラッシュカードをもらチームは勝ちます

注意すること:

  • ゲームの目標を達するために、生徒は自分で何を言うのを準備して置くことはだめです
  •
    先生は毎回に何回拍手をするのが正しいことを覚えたほうがいいです。
  • 通常に20分までにゲームを楽しいすることができます。
  • 始める時に英語を間違ったら(発音など生徒を非難しないように褒めたほうがいいです。
