Procedure: - Now, I know there will be some moral boundary that must be crossed when first teaching this game. I too questioned myself when I decided to experiment with a gambling game, but it really worked wonders. The importance is stressing the fact to the kids that`s its only a game. Anyhow, it`s really simple and requires little setup.
- First, teach the kids the numbers between 1-21. To prepare them for addition later on, give them some simple arithmetic addition problems. Have them shout out the answers in English. Next, it`s time to gamble!
- For those of you who don`t know the rules they are quite simple.
- Each player (student) places a bet for the next hand.
- The dealer(ALT) deals the cards from dealer`s left to dealer`s right, with everyone receiving two cards. Each player receives two cards face up, and the dealer receives one card face up and one card face down (called a hole card).
- Starting with the player to the dealer's left, each player must shout out the total value of their two cards and decides whether to accept more cards (hit) or whether to refuse more cards (stand). Each player may continue to receive cards shouting the new total as they recieve more cards trying to get as close as possible to 21. If they exceed 21 (bust), they are out of the game and lose their bets.
- After every player has completed his or her turn, the dealer takes a turn.
- The dealer flips over his hole card and checks his total. If the dealer's hand is 17 or more, the dealer must stand, or refuse to take another card. If the dealer's hand is 16 or less, the dealer must hit, or take another card.
- The winner is the person who comes closest to 21 without exceeding 21. Remember that the kids play only against you, the dealer, so they need not keep track of their hands against the each other. Only compare their hands against the dealer's hand. At the start of the game each kid recieves 10 chips. They must decide how many chips they want to gamble at the beginning of each hand. If they win they recieve the value they have betted. If they get 21 on their first two cards, reward them with double the amount they have bet. Value of the cards (A= 11 or 1 point, K,Q,J and 10 = 10 points and the other cards retain their face value).
- The catch in this game is giving away prizes. Tell them that the stickers cost 50 chips so if they can make 50 chips they can exchange them for a sticker prize. Kids that lose all their chips can recieve more if they answer a question in English, for example, "How is the weather?","What time is it?", "What`s your name?" etc.
Teaching Suggestions: Variations: This game is for small groups (10 kids). For larger classes divide the class into teams that represent the number of players. You`ll have to make bigger cards to place on the blackboard so everyone can see. If anyone has a difficult time with the ethics of this game, take the dealer out of the game and have the students play against each other.
