Charades
Submitted by: Prncsfungi     Borrowed from or inspired by: The common children's game     Date added: 06/28/08     Edited by: まだ
Outline:  Gesture game relating to sports vocabulary.

Materials Needed:
  • Flashcards if available but not necessary.

Procedure:
  1. If flashcards are available of the target sports vocabulary, place them in an area that is visible to all students, for example the blackboard.
  2. Depending on class size, divide the students into teams and put them into lines, each line representing a team. Instruct the last student and the first student of each line to stand.
  3. Have the first students come towards you putting distance between them and their teams. Whisper to each student a target sports vocabulary, for example "baseball". On a given signal of your choice, i.e. 1-2-3 Go!, the students act out this vocabulary using only gestures, no sounds. The last student of each line tries to guess which sport their teammate is acting out and when/if they know the answer, they raise their hand. The first student to guess correctly receives a point for his/her team.
  4. Once the answer is correctly guessed, the acting students move to the end of their lines and the process repeats.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • The game Charades is called "Gesture Game" in Japanese.

Variations:

  • Due to the simplicity of this game, there is a lot of flexibility to tailor it to each individual class. Some variations are adding multiple sports at once for students to act out, assign a different sport to each gesturing student, or add a telephone-game twist for the students who are sitting.
