Brief Outline: Teaches the hours (eg. one o'clock, two o'clock, etc.) and review numbers.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Arrange the chairs to form a circle and have the students sit in them.
  2. The students go around the circle one by one and say a time. (e.g. one student says one o'clock, the next student says two o'clock, etc).
  3. If a student falters or makes a mistake, they have to go to the centre of the circle. These students will become the “hour-hand” and point to the students who are calling out the time, but before that, they have to say (or repeat after the teacher) the numbers.
  4. As more students become “hour-hands” in the centre of the circle, they have to hold hands or stand in a line. They will have fun pointing their arms around the circle this way.
  5. Teachers should improvise if there are too many students in the circle. The students who are the “hour hand” should still be in a line (or hold hands with other “hour-hands,”) as they follow other students who are doing the time.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This game works with well-behaved classes but can be a nightmare with rowdier classes.
  • For larger classes, teachers should consider breaking the class into smaller groups and have a few games going on simultaneously.
  • If the kids are too “genki” (out of control), consider getting rid of the “hour-hand” concept and have students who make mistakes replace each other. For example, if student A makes a mistake and becomes the hour-hand, then student B makes a mistake; student B will replace student A as the hour-hand and student A will take student B’s seat and rejoin the game.
