Brief Outline: In this guessing game, players take on the role of iron-fisted teacher and restless students! This game is a good way to practice the construction of "I want to + [verb]". 

 

Materials Needed (not included):

  • Big flashcards (A4 or A3 size - color if possible. One for each verb you want to use.)
  • Small card sets - copies of the flashcards
  • Chalkboard/Whiteboard
  • Magnets

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Pre-teach all vocabulary and 'infinitive' grammar point ("I want to [verb].") Put all of the big flashcards on the board. They will act as a visual wordbank for the students during the game.
  2. Let the students make groups of 5-7. The game starts with students playing janken. The winner is the "Teacher" for the first round. The other players are "Students" and form a line facing the "Teacher".
  3. Give each group's "Teacher" a pack of cards. The "Teacher" chooses two cards secretly (or three cards if you have a lot of verbs--or one if you only have about five verbs). The "Teacher" does not show anyone the cards. The "Teacher" holds or pockets the chosen cards.  The HRT/ALT takes the remaining cards.
  4. The first "Student" in line approaches the "Teacher". They say "I want to _____" (choosing any of the vocabulary verbs) from the board. If the "Teacher" does not have this card, they say "No!"  The student then goes to the back of the line and the next student in line tries another verb, using the target phrase.
  5. If the "Teacher" does have the card, they say "Okay." The student will then act out the verb. (e.g. the Student says "I want to jump." The "Teacher" says "Okay," then the student jumps).
  6. Once the student does the right action, he or she becomes the new teacher and the game starts over. The former teacher goes to the back of their group's line and becomes a student.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Use easy "action words".
  • Remind the class that they need to listen to the person who is asking to know which verbs have already been tried.
  • Physically pocketing the chosen cards is important: it prevents the "Teacher" from fraudulently changing cards mid-game. If the students have gone through all of the verbs, they can hold the teacher accountable by asking to see the cards.
  • Encourage the kids to have fun hamming up the gestures and playing teacher.

 

Variations:

  • This game can also be used for the phrase "May I _____ ?" Perhaps for JHS students.

 

 Tips/Cautions:

  • Demonstration with a sample group is the best way to teach this game's rules. Make sure the students have practiced the phrase and the words. They will all need to use it. It's okay for students to get help from other "students" in the group, but they will need to use the phrase. Try not to use one-word queries.
  • They also need to do the gesture. This creates a physical link to the word and it demonstrates comprehension.

  4. 一番目の児童は「先生」のところへ近づいて行く。　動詞を黒板のフラッシュカードから選んで"I want to _____" 　という。　「先生」がその動詞を持っていなかったら、"No"と答える。その児童は児童の列の後ろにまわり、次の児童が「先生」のところに行き、他の動詞で“I want to＿＿ ”を作る。
  5. もし、「先生」がその動詞のカードを持っていたら、「先生」は"Okay" と言う。表現を言った児童はその動作をする。例えば、児童が"I want to jump"　と言って 「先生」が　"okay"と答えたら、児童は跳ぶ。
  6. 児童が正しい動作をしたら、「先生」と児童は立場を換える。「先生」は児童の列の後ろにまわり、｢児童｣は次の「先生」になって新しいカードを選ぶ。

     

バリエーション：

  • "May I _____ ?" を使ってそのゲームを行ってもいいです。

 

教える際のアドバイス：

  • 簡単な単語カードを使ったほうがいいです。
  •  児童に他の児童が「先生」に何を聞いたか（どの単語を使ったかについて）しっかり聞いているように注意を喚起します。
  • 「先生」は選んだカードを実際にポケットにしまうことが大切です。それは「先生」が途中でカードを変えるインチキを防止します。
  • 最悪の場合、児童が全部のカードを言っても「先生」が"No"と答えることがあります。その場合は「先生」に責任がかかっていますから、カードを見せるように｢先生｣に尋ねるか、あるいは、ＨＲＴ／ＡＬＴが助けに入ります。

 

注意すること：

  • 一番よい説明方法は、サンプルになるグループでゲームを見せることです。また、児童全員で表現と単語を練習したほうがいいです。全員がすべてのフレーズと単語を使う必要があるからです。児童はグループ内の他の児童に助けてもらってもかまいません。1語だけの文を使わずにゲームをしましょう。
