Outline:  Students race with the person beside them to say English words.

 

Procedure:
  1. This game can really be used for everything but I like to use it for greetings. In my experience students desk are arranged in pairs. This game has the students pitted against their paired partner.
  2. The Japanese teacher or the ALT says a greeting in Japanese and the pair races to answer it in English shouting out the word or do the action  Sometimes I have the students keep score on their fingers but sometimes they don't keep score at all.  Everyone is playing at one time so it can get kind of noisy.

 

Teaching Suggestions:
  • I like this game because it is good for low level elementary classes. I find if all students are not involved especially in large classes they become bored quickly. Also, everyone is playing and it is fairly fast paced so students don't have time to cry over losing. A good way to get the Japanese teacher involved.

 

Variations:

  • For even lower level classes you can say the greeting in English and they must answer in Japanese, or you can make gestures and the first to do the gesture is the winner.
