Piko Number Relay

Brief Outline: Students compete against each other on a relay race while saying the numbers in order and hitting the numbers with a piko-hammer.

 

Materials Needed (not included):

  • 2-3 piko-hammers: One group gets one hammer.
  • Number flashcards
     

 

Detailed Explanation: 

  1. Teach students numbers from 1-20 to start. If students already know those numbers, feel free to teach other numbers.
  2. Divide students into groups. Two groups would be reasonable but if the class is really big (30+ students), teachers should consider dividing the class into three groups so that each student has a chance to play.
  3. Lay out the flashcards on the floor at the other side of the room. Students should be standing/ sitting in a line.
  4. Review the numbers again if necessary.
  5. Give a hammer to the first student of each group.
  6. When ALT shouts "GO!", the first student of each group will run to the first flashcard and say the number aloud while hitting the flashcard. Then, the student will run back to the group and give the hammer to the next student in line.
  7. The next student will run to the flashcards and hit the next flashcard while saying that number aloud. 
  8. If the next student hits the wrong number, they will have to run back to the group and the next student in line will have to start back at the first number.
  9. The game continues until the last flashcard has been hit and said. The student who says and hits the last number will have to run back to the group to win the game.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This game would be best done in a big room or the gym.
  • JTE will be standing where the students are and make sure that each group is starting at the same spot. ALT will be standing behind the flashcards to help students say the number if they are stuck and/or make sure that the students are hitting the flashcard while saying the correct number.
  • This game is for students to practice numbers so ALT should help students with pronunciation if necessary.

 

Tips/Cautions:

  • This game may get really excited to the point that students will forget to say the number when they hit it or forget which number their team is up to. Therefore it is very important that the ALT knows which number the team is up to and students are saying the correct number.

  6. ALTが「GO」"と叫ぶと、最初の生徒はハンマーを持って一番目のフラッシュカードの所に走っていって、大きな声で数字を言い、その数をフラッシュカードの上で打つ。それから、すぐさまグループに戻って、ピコピコハンマーを二番目の生徒に渡す。
  7. 二番目の生徒は第二のフラッシュカードの所に走っていき、大声で数字を言って打つ。
  8. もし生徒がフラッシュカードの数字を間違って言ったり、順番ではないフラッシュカードを打ったりした場合、その生徒はグループに戻り、次の生徒は第一のフラッシュカードから始めなければならない。
  9. ゲームは最後のフラッシュカードを言って打つまでに続ける。最後の人がフラッシュカードの数字を正しく言って打ち、他のグループより速くグループに戻れば、そのグループが勝つ。

推薦を教えること：

  • ゲームは大きい教室またはジムでしたほうがいいでしょう。
  • JTEは、生徒がグループごとに同じスタートラインから始めるのを確認するために生徒が作っている列のところに立っているほうがいいでしょう。ALTは生徒が正しい数字を言って正しく発音しているかをよく聞き、困っている時には手助けをするために、また正しい数を打っているか確認する為にフラッシュカードのところにいます。
  • このゲームは、生徒が数を習うためのものですから、必要があれば、何回でも生徒の発音練習に協力しましょう。
注意すること：
  • このゲームは、生徒が競争に夢中になりすぎて、数字を打っているときに数字を言うのを忘れたり、どの数字まで到達しているかということを忘れてしまうこともあります。ですから、大切なことは、どのチームがどの数字まで到達しているかをALTは分かっていなければなりません。そうでなければ、生徒が正しい数字を言っているかどうかも分からなくなってしまいます。
