Brief Outline: Practice names of different countries and the target grammar. "Where are you from?" "I`m from _________."

Materials Needed:

  • Flash cards of different country flags (not included)
  • Smaller picture cards of the same flags (not included)
  • String

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Pull out the large World Map......   Start showing the flashcards of the various country flags that you would like to teach the students. Have them raise their hands if they know the country that the flag belongs to and point it out on the world map if they can. Make sure they use correct English and not the "katakanized" equivalents.
  2. Teach the grammar point of the lesson.
    • Q: "Where are you from?"
    • A: "I`m from __________."
  3. Practice a couple times with the students. Ask them the question and have them answer, then repeat by having them ask you. When the kids are comfortable with the vocabulary and grammar, have them interview each other.
  4. Each student receives a country card. The small country cards are made into a necklace. This is easily done by punching some holes and running some string through them. The kids must wear a country`s flag around their neck and not show the others. Just say "secret...sshhh!" and point to the card around your own neck.
  5. The object of the game is to first Janken with someone, with winner getting to ask the question "Where are you from?". The loser must answer which country he is from. The interview finishes with a "See you!" and students move onto the next player.
  6. Students must try and complete their worksheets in a given time. Use a stopwatch and give them 10-12mins.
  7. Demonstrate a couple times with the JTE/HRT before they start interviewing each other to check for understanding.

Variations:

  • Instead of necklaces you can just give them the small picture of the flag, memorize it and put it in their pockets.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • When showing the various countries and teaching the names in English, ask them what is the capital of each country. You`ll be surprised!

Tips/Cautions:

  • Make sure and warn the students that they must use English and not just point to the picture of the flag that is hanging around their neck.

Comments:

  • (Nov 4, 2010) Jesse Willicome said: I actually stumbled on this too late to use it for what I am proposing, but I think this game is perfect for Eigo Note 1, lesson 6 (Where do you want to go?). It would be great to make some sort of "passport" booklet/worksheet, where students could get a "visa" stamp (aka signature) from their classmates after winning Janken.
  • (Nov 4, 2010) Rachel said: Great lesson, Vishal! To save on paper and prep time, I didn't make the necklaces and instead just marked a star next to the students' assigned country on their signature sheet to indicate where they were from.
This is a good activity to involve the HRT and ALT in speaking directly with each of the students. (They especially loved playing Janken with me!)

  2. 次に英文法を教える質問はWhere are you from?聞いて、「I’m from ______.応える
  3.
  7. JTE/HRT
