Volleyball

Outline:  Review words while playing volleyball.

Materials Needed:
  • Balloons - make you sure you have extra, just in case random explosions.
  • Something to make the marker lines of a volleyball court - cones, tape, desks, etc.

Procedure:
  1. Split the teams into two groups and have the groups stand on their side of the net.
  2. One student from each team jankens and the winning team serves first.
  3. As the receiving team receives the balloon and proceeds to hit it, they must also say one of the target vocabulary words.  If they hit it without saying a word, they are out and must sit down.
  4. The team with students standing at the end of the game is the winner.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • For lower level students, make the balloon bigger so it floats longer.  Or, you can allow the other team to catch the balloon really quick to think of a word but too long and they are out of the game.

Variations:

  • Add more than one balloon to make it a little more interesting.
  • If it's a big class, have more than one court.
  • For smaller classes, you can have only one member from each team on the court at a time and when they hit-n-say, the team members rotate.
