Brief Outline: Students practice saying the target vocabulary and attempt to escape to the safe area when the bear card is drawn.

Materials Needed (not included):

  • Flashcards
  • One bear flashcard - the backside of this card should identical to the other cards but the frontside will be marked with a picture of a bear.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After making it clear that you are a bear, get the students to sit around you in a semi-circle.
  2. Spread the flashcards facedown around you, including the bear flashcard.
  3. One by one, the students ask you, "What is this?" The student then flips the card over and you answer depending on the card. If a student flips the bear card, all the students must run to the 'safe' area, which can be any area in the room.
  4. Repeat and continue till there is only one student left. They become the sole survivor.

Variations:

  • Instead of the 'tagged' student taking your place, have him/her become a bear as well.  They sit next you in the subsequent rounds and try to tag the other students when the bear card is drawn.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Do a lot of growling and funny faces to add dramatic touch.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Don't let the students sit too far away because it will be too hard to tag them.
