Brief Outline: Menko is a traditional Japanese children's game. Students try to flip over the cards and practice the target vocabulary.
Materials Needed (not included):
Detailed Explanation:
- Each student starts out the game with three cards.
- There are cards scattered in a circle on a table faceup. A player throws down one of their cards into the circle to flip over one or more of the cards. They will receive all the cards that are flipped face-down (including their own). (Before you become too confused, scroll down the page. On the right, is a short clip of the game being played.)
- Split the class into groups depending on the size of the class. Each group should receive 5-10 cards to put into the circle. In addition to these cards, each student should receive three cards to start the game.
- Each player jankens to see who starts. Let`s say the target vocabulary is 'animals'. The first students must ask, “What are you?” Then they throw down one of their cards into the circle. If they flip over any of the cards, they get to keep them, and the student located to the left, must answer, "I am a ...", based upon the card(s) that was/were flipped. If no cards were flipped over, the students who play lose that card and the next student can go. If a student loses all his/her cards during the game, they are out.
