Brief Outline: This game is for differentiating between sounds. It is useful to concentrate on the consonant sounds that are difficult for Japanese people to hear and say: R/L, B/V, M/N, J/Z, F/H, etc.

Materials Needed (not included):

  • A list of words
  •
Flashcards - to display the correct answer (optional)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Have the students move their desks to the side and gather in the middle of the room.
  2. Write two letters on opposite sides of the chalkboard, for example R and L.
  3. Say a word beginning with one of the two letters. After the word is said, the students must go to the corresponding side of the room. After a three second countdown, charge down the center of the room to clearly divide the students.  Then, say the correct answer.
  4. Rinse and repeat.

Variations:

  • Only say the word once. This prompts students to pay attention.
  •
Add in a point system to see who can get the most points.

Tips/Cautions:

  • The kids will get riled up if you put a lot of energy into this. Beware and use caution.
