Brief Outline: Students form prepositional sentences in hopes of guessing the 'secret sentence'.

Materials Needed:

  • PrepositionMastermind handout (You might think about printing the worksheet on the front & back for double the fun).
  • Prior to class, create a handful of 'secret sentences' based upon the vocabulary from the handout.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After dividing the class into teams, hand out the worksheets.
  2. After reviewing the vocabulary on the worksheet, create a couple of sentences with the students so they can understand how the worksheet works. (e.g. "The soccer ball is on the desk" ).
  3. Once you're confident the students understand how to form a sentence, divide the class into groups and have them decide the order of each student in their group. Have the first student from each group stand up.
  4. Explain to the students you have a 'secret' sentence, emphasising the word, 'secret'.
  5. The game starts by you asking the standing students a question. This question could be based upon something they learned in a previous English class, or it could be any question under the sun: "What is ねこ (cat) in English?"  The first student to answer the question correctly gets to take a shot at forming a prepositional sentence and trying to guess the secret sentence. The secret sentence has three parts: noun, preposition and location of the object. If the student guesses one part of the sentence correctly, they receive one point for their team. If they guess two parts, they receive two points.
  6. After a secret sentence guess has been made, the students standing sit down and the next set of students stand up.
  7. Shuffle and repeat the process until a group guesses all three parts of the secret sentence. That group receives five points.
  8. The group with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Variations:

  • Instead of having the class play in groups, split the class into pairs and have them play against each other.
