外来語を知ろう

児童が使ってる日本語の中には、多くの外来語が存在する。そのほとんどは、もととなる言語での発音と違ったり、中には意味の違う使い方をしてるものの（和製英語など）があったりする。

そこで、本単元では様々の国から来た身の回りの外来語を取り上げる。外来語とそのもとになる言葉の発音を聞かせてその違いに気付かせたい。

また、私たちが普段何気なく使ってる漢字も中国から伝わってきたものであることなどにも興味や関心を持たせたい。このように気付きから、自分たちが普段使ってる日本語に対して、改めて興味や関心が高まるものと期待してる。

外来語を実際に使ってみる場面として、レストランでの注文の場面を取り上げる。児童は前単元で、衣服の買い物を体験してるが、ここでは、買い物ではなく好きなものを注文する場面である。最後には注文したものをクイズ形式で発表させ、まとめの活動とする。

Along with gairaigo (‘loan words’ explained in 1-4), the Japanese language also has a substantial amount of wasei-eigo words.

This lesson will introduce students to wasei-eigo words and be aware of the differences in pronunciation and meaning.

The goal of this lesson is to renew the students’ interest and passion for their own language.

The activity for this lesson is similar to the previous lesson’s shopping game, and completes the lesson with a short quiz.

[Wasei-eigo simply means ‘made-in-Japan’ words. They are foreign words that Japan has brought into the country and assigned a definition that most foreigners who haven’t studied Japanese would never know the actual meaning of them. For example, the words in parenthesis are wasei-eigo words: “rearview mirror” (back mirror), “steering wheel” (handle), “upgrade” (version up), etc.]

How Much Is It

This lesson includes three short activities to teach about shopping. First, students start off learning shopping vocabulary. Second, they learn key phrases/questions. Third, they setup shops go shopping.
