アルファベットで遊ぼう

現在の日本の社会には英語があふれている。特にアルファベットに関しては、コンピュータをはじめ、生活の中に溶け込んでいるものも多い。町を歩いていても、数多くのアルファベットが目に飛び込んでくる。それは児童にとっても同様で、テレビやインターネットなどを通して、いろいろな場面において、アルファベットに触れている。

本単元では、そのアルファベットを中心として取り上げる。アルファベットには大文字と小文字とがあるが、文字に触れるのは初めてであるため、まず、より身近な大文字を扱うこととする。小文字は、Lesson 2で扱う。最終的な目標は、アルファベットを聞いて、どの文字かわかるということである。これには、第3学年の国語科のローマ字を扱っていることから、その習熟を図るという意味もある。また、ローマ字と英語のつづりは同じアルファベットを使っていても、表記方法が違うということにも触れておきたい。

なお、この単元では、アルファベットの読み方という表現を使用しているが、これはＡ（エイ）、Ｂ(ビー）などを表してる。

THAT'S RIGHT

Modern Japanese culture is flooded with [incorrect] English. Since the creation of the computer, the English alphabet has become a normal part of everyday life. Wherever you look, wherever you go, your eyes are bombarded with English.

This lesson will focus on the uppercase alphabet and save the lowercase for Lesson 2. The final aim of this lesson is to have the students be able to recognize and read the uppercase English alphabet.

It will also provide an opportunity for the students to master the romaji they started learning in grade 3 of their Japanese language classes, and point out that while English and romaji might use some of the same letters, they use different methods of notation.

[NOTE: I think the textbook writers made a mistake because if I’m not mistaken, elementary school students don’t start officially learning romaji until grade 4.]

Alphabet Shopping

This is a shopping game using uppercase letters, the aim of which is to have children familiarise themselves with the letters in a non-patterned way.

First Phonics Lesson: This game gets them to associate letters with word sounds by having students generate English words in various categories that start with specific letters.
