Brief Outline
Students learn months of the year and play bingo.
Materials Needed
Detailed Explanation
- Give each student a worksheet and tell them to try and fill-in-the-blanks for the names of the months.
- Briefly practice the key question, "When is your birthday?" and how to answer. Do several practices (everyone in the class together, split the class into two, practice in pairs) until everyone is confident and can remember what to say.
- Next, tell them they must interview their classmates and collect nine birthdays if possible in the 3x3 bingo grid. Give them a time limit of 10-12 minutes.
- Once everyone has completed their bingo grid, have them form groups of 5-6 (lunch groups is usually easiest) and play janken to see who starts first.
- Winners of each group will stand up and announce their birthdays. If a student has that birthday written down they can mark it off.
- The first student to get bingo wins.
Variations
Teaching Suggestions
- This activity can be extended into a full 45 minute lesson or just as a stand-alone 15-30 minute activity.
If you want to extend this lesson, you can start by teaching the months using flashcards and playing a couple of warm-up games beforehand (take away a flashcard, grab erasers in pairs when keyword is said, etc).
If there are no bingos after the first round of birthday speeches, then do another round by playing Janken in each group again.
I previously used this activity with self introductions where students would practice 'Hello, my name is <...>.'
Tips/Cautions
- Remember if you take part in the interview stage, that you must also take part in the janken-ing with a group so that there's a chance your birthday comes up, too.
