Brief Outline
Students move to the left or right side of the classroom depending on what they can or cannot do. This game allows low-level/shy students to practice using the grammar point, “can” with their teammates before they move on to individual work.
Detailed Explanation
- Draw a big `X` on the left hand side (LHS) of the board and a big `O` on the right hand side (RHS).
- Ask the students, "Can you play baseball?" .
- Students move to the RHS of the room if they can and LHS of the room if they can`t play baseball.
- This divides the class into two teams. The LHS team and the RHS team will interview each other in a loud voice and students will answer accordingly.
- LHS: Can you play baseball?
- RHS: Yes, I can (play baseball). Can you play baseball?
- LHS: No, I can`t (play baseball).
- Repeat Step 2, replacing baseball with another vocabulary word. Keep playing until you think the students understand or are becoming bored.
Variations
- For Step 3, if students take too long to pick a side, or if you just want to add some tension, give them a dramatic 5-second countdown to decide.
Teaching Suggestions
- The best place to use this game is between activity 1 & 2 of lesson 4.
- Have one teacher on each side of the room to guide/check the teams.
