Brief Outline

Students take turns as waiters, and restaurant customers ordering food.

Materials Needed (not included)

  • Food and drinks (model, paper or real).
  • Paper plates & plastic cups.

Detailed Explanation

  1. Clear the desks away, apart from one or two with which you make a table in the middle of the classroom. Split the class into two teams. On either side of the classroom, arrange all of the different foods which will be used in the game. These can be either cardboard cut outs of foodstuffs, any models you have found, or you can even bring in real fruits and things, which gets the students more excited.
  2. Start off with the ALT sitting in the middle table. The first two from each team come to the table and ask, "What would you like?". The ALT then replies, "I would like... (any number of foods and drinks)."  The students then race to pick up the ordered foods and bring them to the table. The winner then gets to sit in the chair and make the order for the next round. The fastest team gets a point, and the team with most points at the end wins the game.

Teaching Suggestions

  • This is good to practice saying "I would like...", and also food/drink vocabulary.

Tips/Cautions

  • Sometimes the students will get too excited and end up throwing the food around or dropping it. If they do this make them go and apologise sincerely to the 'customer'. This tends to be quite fun as well.
