Brief Outline
Students draw pictures and ask their friends, "What's this?"
Materials Needed (not included)
- Pictures - these are to be used for a demonstration before the game.
- Small pieces of papers - four pieces for each student.
Detailed Explanation
- After teaching the grammar points "What's this?", and "It's a..." , ask students about the pictures you prepared before class using, "What's this?". Make sure the students understand the drawings aren't supposed to be Mona Lisa masterpieces.
- Give each student four pieces of paper and 3-5 minutes to draw four favorite items. Make sure you stick to the time or students will spend the whole period drawing.
- Do a role play with the HRT. Show each other a drawing and take turns asking each other, "What's this?". Model the HRT getting the question right and taking the card, and getting it wrong and not taking the card.
- Practice the question/answer as a class to reinforce students' ability to ask/answer the question.
- Then, let the students go at it for 5-10 minutes.
- Have the students return to their seats and ask them, "How many cards do you have?". Reward students who have more than four cards.
Variations
- Janken Interview: After students ask each other, "What's this?", they can play Janken and the winner receives the card.
Teaching Suggestions
Tips/Cautions
- There is a possibility that everyone will still have four cards by the end of the game but the real object is to practice asking/answering the question.
