Brief Outline: Using a fun zoomed-photo picture quiz, students practice vocabulary and target language from Eigo Noto's Lesson 7.

Materials Needed:

  • WhatsThisPictureQuiz attachments: Rachel's (original) / Roger's (stored off-site)
  • Computer/projector, scrap paper

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Review the necessary target grammar, and if desired, review vocabulary needed to answer questions in the slideshow, but try not to give too many hints!
  2. Introduce the picture quiz and the concept behind it. You can use the first slide (a ruler) as an example of how the quiz works, because it's really easy.
  3. As you show each slide, ask the students, "What's this?"
  4. Have each student follow the slideshow and write (no talking!) each slide number and the answer in Japanese. Don't worry: at the end of the quiz, they will answer verbally in English.
  5. After you've gone through the slides, go through the answer slides one by one. Before you show the answers, ask the students to tell you the answers in English, using the target phrase, "It's a _____."

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Set a time limit for each slide, or the students will take forever.
  • If some students seem confused by the English for the hakusai (Chinese cabbage) slide, it's because Japanese speakers do not use the katakana for that variety of cabbage. Replace the picture with green cabbage, if desired.
