Brief Outline: Students act as cashiers by adding up the prices of two food items.

Materials Needed (not included):

  • Plastic hammer toys from 100 yen shop (1 hammer per team)
  • Paper (1 per team)
  • Pencil (1 per team)
  • Flashcards with prices

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Teach students how to say the food and the corresponding prices (e.g. "Sushi and tempura are ¥900").
  2. Students can get 1-3 points for every question depending on the level of difficulty.
  3. Divide the class into three teams or more depending on the number of students in a class.
  4. For each round, two players will represent their team to answer the question. The players will help each other.
  5. Each pair has a hammer, a pencil, and paper.
  6. If the players know the answer, they hit their hammer on the desk. Tell them not to hit if they don't know the answer. Teacher asks the question, "How much are sushi and tempura?" and students answer the question.
  7. The first team to hit the hammer gets to answer the question.
  8. If they answer correctly, they earn the point(s) for their team. If their answer is wrong, allow other teams to answer the question.
  9. The team with the most points wins!

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Ask the HRT to balance the teams. Mix strong and weak students evenly.
  • For more difficult questions combine thousands, hundreds, and tens in the prices.
  • Yen would be more familiar and workable for students.
  • Use numbers (prices) that are easy to add.
