Brief Outline: This is a simple gambling game.

Materials Needed (not included):

  • Vocabulary Flashcards: The back of the vocabulary cards should have some hint as to what the card is. A suggestion is to print out a vocabulary card and then cut the picture out. Grab a second sheet of paper and glue the cut out picture onto that sheet. Then laminate. The result is a general outline of the picture on the back of the card.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Divide the class into teams and explain to them that each team has a thousand dollars. Write the team name on the board and write, $1000 underneath each team.
  2. Review the vocabulary with the students.
  3. Put 5-6 cards on the board.
  4. Randomly choose a team to start. Ask them, "What card is it?" Once they give an answer ask the team, "How much?" They post their bet. Write both their guess and bet under their team name.
  5. Ask all the teams.
  6. Show them the card and add or subtract their totals.
  7. Repeat.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • The amount of extra English is great. Some other English phrases include: 1.) "I think it is a...", 2.) "What`s this/that?", 3.) "It`s a...", 4.) "It could be...", etc.
  • Be dramatic as it adds to the excitement of the game.
