Brief Outline: Students become Secret Santas by drawing presents and making Christmas cards.

Materials Needed:

  • SecretSanta attachment: Includes present cards (one for each student) and a Christmas decorations sheet (optional)
  • Blank pieces of white paper to make Christmas cards (one for each student)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Hand out one present card to each student in the class. Tell them to write their name on the back and to write one present they want for Christmas.
  2. When everyone has written on their paper, collect all the papers and shuffle them, then give random cards back to the students so that they have another student's card. Tell them that they have to draw that present.
  3. When most students have finished drawing, hand out a sheet of white A4 paper to each student. Tell them that they will make a Christmas Card and demonstrate folding the paper in half.
  4. Write on the blackboard what you want them to write in their Christmas card. For mine, I had them write:
    • Dear (name),
    • Merry Christmas!
    • From: (name)
  5. Then draw a simple Christmas tree on the blackboard and tell the students to decorate the front of their card with 'Christmassy' things.
  6. About five minutes before class ends, tell the students to slip their present into their card, and to give them to their classmate while saying "Merry Christmas" and that the recipient should say "Thank you."

Variations:

  • 1. Depending on how long you want them to take, they can draw on the present card with coloured pencils.
  • For older grades I gave them the option of the the Christmas decorations sheet to decorate their card. It took too long for the year ones and twos to colour and cut out the pictures in time, but the older students (even some of the more rowdy ones) seemed to like the decorations sheet.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you want to make sure no student gets their own present card back when you hand them out, keep the cards of each half of the class in two piles and give one side's cards to the other.
  • Be very explicit with where you want them to write in the card. I demonstrated several times and drew a picture of the card on the blackboard with marks saying where to write. Even then, go around and check where they're writing because some will have become confused.
  • Frequently remind students how much time they have for writing and drawing or they may not be able to finish in time to give the card and present at the end.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Especially with younger grades, some students may not know what the present written on the card is. If not, you can give them the option of checking with the other student, or make sure at the beginning that they don't write anything too specific.
  • Younger grades will, of course, complain that they can't read English, so make sure to read it out loud, explain what it means, and reassure them that they can just copy it. Even the year ones were able to copy the message down.

Comments:
