Brief Outline: Students practice saying 'months' or 'days' while trying to not get knocked out of the game.

Materials Needed:

  • A song (not included): The 'months' or 'days of the week' song works really well. The students will need to know the song before the game starts.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Start by getting the students to sit in a circle. For bigger classes, break the circles into 2-4 circles.
  2. Each student hovers their right hand under the left hand of the student to their right, and their left hand hovers over the right hand of the student to their left. Simplistically speaking, right hand under, and left hand over.
  3. Game starts when the song starts.
  4. For every month or day of the week the students sing, they clap their right hand upward. Their left hand doesn't move.
  5. When the song reaches the last 'month of the year' or 'day of the week', each student tries to clap their right hand upward, but at the same time pull their left hand away so that it is not clapped. If their left hand is clapped, they are out and go sit in the middle of the circle. If they pull their left hand away before it is clapped, they are safe and proceed to the next round.
  6. When there are enough people in the center of the circle to start a new game, they do so, creating a nesting effect as the internal circles get smaller and smaller.
  7. When there are only two students left from the original circle, those two are the champions. Reset to the original circle and start again.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Students might be so focused on the last 'month' or 'day' that they stop singing.
