Brief Outline: Students turn over cards and say the number which they turn over and their sum OR product.

Materials Needed:

  • A deck of cards for every six students.
  • Remove all of the Jacks, Queens and Kings.
  • Divide each deck into red cards and black cards.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Divide the class into groups of three.
  2. Give each group half a deck of cards (reds or blacks, no J Q or K). Students spread these cards face down on their tables.
  3. Students play Janken, with the winner playing first.
  4. The first player turns over a card, and says the number of that card. They then turn over another card and say the sum (+) of the two cards. If the cards are the same s/he gets to keep the cards. If the cards are different s/he turns the cards face down.
  5. Repeat Step 4 with the second player, then the third, then the first student goes again.
  6. The winner is the student with the most cards at the end.
  7. Students repeat from step 3.

Variations:

  • Use the product (x) of the cards instead of the sum if you are practicing 1-100.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Make sure students understand that if a player doesn't say a card's number or the sum of the cards, the other students can't continue until they've helped the player.
  • If teams are very unbalanced, mix students to have the winners from each team in a new team.
  • If one team finishes quicker than other teams, take a few pairs from their pack and have them play again.

Tips/Cautions:

  • For special needs classes the students don`t add the numbers.
