Brief Outline: Students practice numbers from 1-10 or 10-100 using a thumb war.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Demonstrate with the teacher how to have a thumb war and practice the starting chant.
  2. Students roam around and find a partner.
  3. Each player holds out their right hand in a "thumbs up" and they link hands in a monkey grip.
  4. Both players chant "One, two, three, four, let`s start a thumb war", their thumbs pass over each other in time with this chant.
  5. To win, a player must pin down their opponents thumb and count from 1 to 10 in a loud voice before their opponent escapes.
  6. Repeat from step 2.

Variations:

  • Change the counting in step 4 to match the numbers you are teaching (Students count from 10 - 50 or 10 -100 in tens "10, 20, 30, 40, 50").

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Walk around checking student pronounciation.
