Brief Outline: Tokuten (得点) means 'score'. Students combine colors and animals to compete in a hidden points game.

Materials Needed:

  • Tokuten attachment: Print out the colorful animals onto cards and cut them out. Each student gets one card each. There are six animals and six colors, so everyone should have a different card.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Give the students a worksheet and tell them they have to get as many points as they can but they don't know what points each color and animal is worth. This will be announced later.
  2. Students mingle and find a partner. Students have the following conversation about the card they are holding:
    • "What's this?"
    • "It's a blue monkey. What's this?"
    • "It's a red mouse."
  3. Students exchange cards and mark a circle in the box corresponding to the card they reveived.
  4. Repeat with the new card until time is up, marking circles for all the cards the student receives.
  5. When the time is up announce the point values for each color and animal. Students use multiplication and addition to calculate their total score. (The teachers liked having a math element to the lesson.)
  6. Give a prize or a round of applause to the kids with most points.

Variations:

  • Instead of "What's this?" you could change the conversation to: "I have..." or "I like..."

Teaching Suggestions:

  • You can remove the Japanese explanation from the worksheet if you so desire. (I wrote it myself so it may not be 100% correct. I think it's almost correct though!)

Tips/Cautions:

  • It says on the attachment the students can put more than one circle in each box, but if you tell them they can only interview the same friend once, then this shouldn't happen because everyone will have different cards, unless you have an enourmous class.
