V-Compliments
Submitted by: Amy Yosh     Date added: 02/10/10   Edited by: Joyce P. Le

Outline: Create Valentine's Day cards and review adjectives by making Valentine's compliments.

Materials Needed:
  • Construction paper - red, white and/or pink construction paper cut into card-size pieces with at least enough for one per student
  • Scissors, glue, stickers, sparkles, colouring pencils/felts and other artsy things
  • Flashcards to review adjectives - not included
  • Pictures, props, example cards, etc to explain what Valentine's Day is like in the ALT's home country.

Procedure:
  1. Start by reviewing adjectives, using flashcards, or whatever you want. Consider emphasising adjectives that are appropriate for compliments.
  2. Discuss the differences between Valentine's Day in Japan and the ALT's country by using the props, pictures, example cards, etc.
  3. Explain that exchanging cards is common for Valentine's Day and it's okay to give them to people who are just friends. For example, in Canada, elementary school students give cards to everyone in their class. Also, teach the phrase "Happy Valentine's Day!"
  4. Write "Happy Valentine's Day" and "You are..." on the board and explain that students can pick an adjective to finish the "You are..." sentence. Give examples of appropriate compliments using the adjectives that you reviewed.
  5. Hand out the card paper, sparkles and such, and let the students get to work.

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Depending the age level, you may want to get the students to practise writing their compliment sentences on a scrap piece of paper and then checking them before they write it on their cards.
  • I highly recomment having example cards. You don't necessarily have to make them yourself, although that would be best for the students since they will have the same materials.  Or, you can print examples from the internet.
  • This game is recommended for higher level English classes/ students who can read and write in English.

Cautions:

  • Be careful about which adjectives you emphasis when reviewing adjectives. No one wants a Valentine's card that says "You are smelly!" etc.
  • Since some students turn into Picassos when it comes to arts-n-crafts, making this activity the accompaniment to the first lesson of adjectives is not the wisest idea.
