Brief Outline: To complete a weather map of Japan, students interview each other.

 

Materials Needed:

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After teaching "How`s the weather in _____?" and "It`s _____", hand out worksheet A to half the class and worksheet B to the other half.

  2. Side A asks in a big voice "How`s the weather in Aomori?", side B should give the answer on their worksheet ("It`s _____"). Reverse roles with B asking about Hakodate.

  3. Have side A draw the weather for Aomori and side B draw the weather for Hakodate in the cities` boxes.

  4. Students walk around, find a partner from the opposite team and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 in pairs with new cities.

  5. When students finish their maps they sit down and answer weather questions for unfinished students. 

     

Teaching Suggestions:

  • HRT and ALT should consider do a role play to demonstrate how to ask and answer questions.
  • Change one of the cities to the city students live in or where the school is located at (Change the name then drag the pointer to your school`s location using the yellow dot at the end). Or use cities that students are studying.
  • For lower grade/level classes, don't move to step 3 unless students have mastered step 2 as a class. Also write the cities' names in Hiragana (only for classes who haven`t been taught the alphabet).

  • (Oct 5, 2010) Chris B. said: I adapted this game for my special ed class, making the game less interview-centric and more search-centric. Kept the same target language / questions in the game, but I was the "Asker" and they were the "Responders" after they found the city in question. 
    Made each city its own individual sheet and posted them around the room. The students had to search around for it, then write and speak the respective weather in the city. 
    It was good fun. Just make sure to adequately introduce and practice the sentence / vocabulary prior to the game.

  • 低学年にとって、クラスと一緒にStep2を上手になるまでにStep3を行かない。そして市の名前がひらがなで書いたほうがいいです。
