Dicey Months

Outline: Two teams line up side by side and call out the month corresponding to the numbers on the dice.
 
Materials Needed:
  • 3 dice for every 10 students.

 

Procedure:
  1. Divide the class into teams of 5.
  2. Have two teams face and stand in front of each other. Put a die inbetween the students (Student-Die-Student).
  3. Roll the dice and have the first student in each team compete to call out the month corresponding to the number on the dice. e.g. 5 = May.
  4. Other team members can help.  The faster student gets 2 points for their team and the slower student gets 1 point after saying the month.
  5. The students move to the end of the line and the next students in line play.
  6. Repeat this step until all students have played.
  7. Add a second die and repeat until all students have played (Let the students roll).
  8. Add a third die and repeat until all students have played (Let the students roll).

 

Teaching Suggestions:
  • Do a demonstration with the JTE before making teams.
     
  • If you just use 2 dice for the whole game you will almost never get earlier or later months. (January is impossible, December is rare).

 

 

Cautions:

  • This works better with under 20 students.
  • This game is quite competitive. Not recommended for very young or easily upset classes.
  • You may get a triple 5 or 6, so prepare for that slight chance.
