Brief Outline: Students answer questions from various topics. The higher the point value, the more difficult the question is.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After the class forms groups, draw a grid on the board and write the topics above every column. Then, write "10" in the box directly under each topic, the point value increases as you go downward.
  2. One student from each group stands up and plays Janken. The winner is the team that starts the game. The team can choose a topic AND point value.
  3. The question for that box is asked and any team can answer. The team can discuss the answer but the team member standing is the one who must raise their hand to answer it.
  4. The team that correctly answers the question receives the alloted points and chooses the next topic/point value.

Variations:

  • To spice up the fun, try adding in a "Daily Double". Have certain questions be Daily Double questions. The students don't know which questions they are but if a Daily Double question is chosen, the team that answers the question can receive double the points.

I use this as my introduction activity for 2nd and 3rd graders to see what they remember about me, my country, and the old textbooks. I found it generally works better with only 10 and 20 point questions. 40 or 50 points is too much for one question.
