Brief Outline: Groups work to accumulate points in order to defeat other teams' fighting characters.

Materials Needed:

  • MarvelVsCapcom attachments: Marvel / Capcom. There are 12 characters in total, 6 from Marvel and 6 from Capcom. Most classes have six groups, so this game is best played in even numbers. For example, if there are six groups, each group should have 2 characters to work with.
  • Calculator and CD player (optional)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Before class, make a list of questions or scrambled sentences focusing on a grammar point or for review. Add up the points and divide by the number of teams. This is how much points you should assign to each character. For example, if you have 600 points and there are 12 characters, each one should have 50 life points. Try to make it an even number.
  2. The students should have about five minutes to solve as many questions as they can to start round one.
  3. After checking the answers, points are given for the correct answers. I split the points into 20, 30, and 50 points for easy, medium and difficult questions.
  4. The students janken any team's character they choose. If they win the janken, the full amount of points awarded is deducted from the targeted character. If they lose the janken, the defending team gets only 35% of the damage. 20 points (7 points taken off), 30 (10 points), 17 (50 points).
  5. There is also a special power move. If the teams collect any three point values, they can use them toegther at once for an ulimate attack. The max would be 150 points.
  6. When a couple of teams get completely knocked out, play the game again from the beginning.

Variations:

  • You can mix up the rules as much as you like.
  • Any other characters would be great like Hokuto no Ken or Dragonball.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • I would bring a calculator for all the math going on. I also play music from the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Fate of Two Worlds OST, but any music from a fighting game should be fun.

Tips/Cautions:

  • Teams may gang up on other teams together. Just play the game a couple of times for them to get revenge.
