Brief Outline: Teams make sentences/questions in order to build up territory and become Shogun.

Materials Needed:

  • SengokuJidai attachment:
    • James': I made enough for 6 teams (number of rows we have in my school's classes). Cutting out the pieces is a pain. I laminated mine and used BlueTack to stick them on.
    • Joseph's: This includes questions that are a review for all 3 grades. You will also need a map of Japan and castle game pieces.

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After breaking the class into teams, the teacher chooses a letter, for example N, and creates a question: "Who was one of the most famous emperors of France?"  The first team to answer "Napoleon" gets to claim the hexagon for their team.  Then, the winning team chooses the next letter.  NOTE: the answer should start with the same letter as the letter of the hexagon.
  2. If a team surrounds another team's hexagon on three sides, the surrounding team gains control of that hexagon.
  3. The team with the most territories becomes Shogun and rules Japan for the next 200 years, or at least until you play the game again

Variations:

  • Like Jeopardy, You can give the answer and the students must make a question: "Was he Napoleon?"
  • Instead of castles, the teams could have historical Japanese figures.
  • Joseph's Version: Students make groups and the ALT reads each question. The first team to guess right gets one castle for that prefecture. The team with the most castles at the end of the game is the winner.

There are not enough questions for the map.
