Brief Outline: Diwali is the most popular festival in India. It means festival of lights. Student learn about this festival while completing worksheets, making greeting cards and playing various English games.

 

Materials Needed:

  • Diwali attachments: Copy the first two pages back-to-back on a page.
  • Construction paper

 

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After handing out the fill-in-the-blank listening worksheet, have the students repeat a couple times the new words in the Tool Box. Then, read the story a few of times and have the students write the answers. Afterwards, check answers as a class.
  2. Have the students flip over their sheets and answer the five questions on the back.
  3. Then, hand out the Diwali Bingo sheet. There are 30 words total in the list. They are to choose 24 words and write them in the bingo boxes. Play bingo by calling out random words from the list.
  4. Finally, have the students create Diwali greeting cards. Lay out the construction paper on the teacher's desk and have the students come and select the paper they want to use to make their cards. Using the Diwalie Greetings located below the questions they previously answered, students create their own original Diwali greeting card.

 

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you have a video showing the Diwali festival, that could enhance the lesson. A powerpoint presentation would work, as well. A lot of pictures would suffice.
