Brief Outline: This is a lesson that combines listening to a popular song as well as a short reading exercise to introduce some new vocab as well as some very basic conversation practice.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. To begin the lesson, brainstorm with the class different genres of music as well as artists while writing them up on the board in two columns. Do this for as long as makes sense and then introduce the topic of "Music".  Tell the class that today they will be doing three things:
    • short conversation practice
    • short reading/new words
    • listening practice
  2. Call on a few students at random and pose the question the way it appears on the student handout: "So, Mr. Ochi, what kind of music do you like?" Let the students answer freely and again perhaps write their answers up while giving feedback. Continue this with a few more students before handing out the student page.
  3. Once the page has been handed out, go over the example conversation and practice some listen and repeat if you like (conversation as well as the genre names) focus on natural English pronunciation instead of the inevitable katakana sounds you will most likely hear. Spend as much time on this as you think makes sense.
  4. Next, explain that in pairs, students are to use the model conversation to interview six other classmates and write down their answers in the space provided. Perhaps, do the first one with the JTE or failing that a strong student to give the class an idea what to do.
  5. Next, ask the kids if they know the band Lostprophets and tell them that you would like to introduce them to this artist. At this point, hand out the reading print (About the band and the interview with new words highlighted).  Explain that the "About the Band" section is a short overview of the band and encourage them to read silently for a few minutes to get a general idea of the artist. You may wish to do some sort of oral comprehension questions. Move on to the next page the "Interview."
  6. Here, have students read siliently and try to match the words below to their definitions. Encourage them to use dictionaries or work in groups if they like. You may want to tell them that it is not important for them to understand EVERY word but rather, get a general idea of the text to help them guess the meaning of the highlighted words. After a given amount of time, ellict the answers or write them up on the board.
  7. Finally, Pass out the word list and the actual song gap fill. Go over the words that are missing (or if you think your students are good enough you may opt to withold this sheet altogether).
  8. Now it is time for the song! Play the song once in its entirety and encourage students to just listen and get a feel for the rhythm and perhaps pick out a few words. Play it a second time this time encouraging students to listen more carefully in the attempt to fill in the missing words. Do this until you think most students have at least some words down. (on the second or third playthrough of the song you may wish to utilize pair/group work to make it easier) Last of all, ellicit, go over the answers and have the students write their score in the space provided. If there is time after all of this, treat them to the video if you can manage to get a video or dvd of it! hope this makes sense!  Here's the video on YouTube.
