Brief Outline: Students listen to a story and write down words they recognize in bingo squares.

Materials Needed:

  • A short story (not included)

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Tell students they will be listening to a passage and give them a very brief outline of what it will be about, for example "You will soon listen to a boy called John about soccer."
  2. Ask the students to guess nine words that will come up in the passage. For example, students might write down: ball, David Beckham, goal, dream, field, etc. Get them to write the nine words in a bingo style grid.
  3. Read the story and if the students hear one of their words being said, they get to cross it off their bingo card.
  4. The first student to bingo wins.

Variations:

  • This could be used for JHS (I haven't tried yet) but I think it's perfect for HS level.
  • The grid can be made bigger if you want the game to go on for longer.
  • Any bingo variatons (for example, all standing up and when they get their first word they can sit down) can be used for extra fun!
