Brief Outline:
This is the second in a series of 12 power point lessons designed to teach phonics to first year students during the first 3 months of them entering JHS.
Materials Needed: PowerPointPhonicsLesson02 PowerPoint
A projector, screen, laptop computer, extension cord and Microsoft Office's PowerPoint (Go to the class early. Use the 10 minute break in between classes to set up your equipment. Have the students move their desks back so the projector makes a large enough picture for everyone to see. Be sure to test your setup before class before attempting to do during class. Also, having a backup lesson is a good idea as technology can be unpredictable. I've never had any problems, but it is important to have safeguards.)
Detailed Explanation: Teach the kanji for 母音 (boin - vowel) and 子音 (shiin - consonant). Chances are the students will not know these kanji. An easy way to remember these two kanji are that the mother sounds are vowels and the child sounds are consonants. These concepts are vital to teach EARLY so that students can use them to remember spelling and grammar rules.
Explain that sometimes two letters blend together to make one sound: BLue, CLock, FLower, etc. Have the students repeat the blended sounds and the example words for each powerpoint slide.
Shut down the projector and go to the chalkboard and write down blended sounds at random: bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl, br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, wr, ch, ph, sh, th, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, ck, ng.
Explain to the class that they must say the blended sound after you count to three.
Count "1, 2, 3" and hopefully the class will say the sound. If they need help, repeat it with them and repeat until they can say the blend all by themselves.
Do this for all the sounds at random until they are confident.

Cautions:
- KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT!!!! This is so vital. Nothing is worse than showing up for class with a bunch of stuff that you don't know how to work. It can cause the class to become wild very quickly. On the contrary, if you are quick and professional you will have every student's undivided attention as this is the first time they will be encountering such educational tools.
