Brief Outline: Students fill in the gaps to confirm their understanding of in/definite articles.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Confirm some basic rules on A/THE with the students. I normally tell them:
    • A = 1.) introduction/first time. 2.) One of many.
    • The = 1.) introduced for the second time. 2.) The only one of something.
    • JTE's try to confuse the issue, but I think these explanations are pretty watertight.
  2. Have students go through and write "a/the" in the blanks on the worksheet.
  3. Follow up by checking answers and saying why (e.g. the highest: Like Highlander, there can be only one), while the JTE writes the answers on the board.

Tips/Cautions:

  • This activity is for 3rd graders and they might not understand the story because it is connected with HiIlary and Jackson, who are both Kiwis.

"... many people want to go to ___ New Zealand ..." I don't think "a" or "the" can fit into that blank. Am I missing something?
