Brief Outline: This is a short (and hopefully fun) speaking activity that practices the grammar point "Are you ~ ?"
Materials Needed:
- AreYouGuessing worksheets: There are two to choose from 'Are' and 'They'. The 'Variation Option' worksheet was designed for the option explained in the Variation section below.
Detailed Explanation:
Put students in pairs after practicing "Are you ~ ?" "Yes, I am./ No, I am not."
Students choose to a character on the right side of the worksheet and keep it a secret. Janken to see who goes first. The winning student asks the first question, for example, "Are you a student?" The answers they receive narrow down the character until they know who it is and ask, for example, "Are you Doraemon?"
The winner is the first student to guess correctly. The following is a sample conversation.
Student One is Pooh and Student Two is Totoro - Student 1: Are you hungry?
- Student 2: Yes, I am. Are you a teacher?
- Student 1: Yes, I am. Are you from Japan?
- Student 2: Yes, I am. Are you a student?
- Studnet 1: No, I'm not. Are you Totoro?
- Student 2: Yes, I am.

We modified so the students sign the other students paper, in the box of the character they were impersonating. When the students had a sig in every character box, we gave em a sticker for their point card (they also had to got through last round with me).
Worked really well.
Thanks so much! - (June 25, 2010) Raymond Corrigan said: Some variations with different grammar are:

I used this for a class of 2 students. One student was paired up with the JTE and the other with me (the ALT). We did it where one person asks the questions until they discover the other person's "secret identity" and then that person asks until they discover who you are. Worked great and could be repeated a few times!
