Brief Outline:  Milling activity where students are given an identity. And they mill about writing each others names and nicknames. Practice saying, "You can call me _____."

Materials Needed

  • Nicknames worksheet

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Hand out worksheet and identity cards.
  2. Tell the students to keep their identities a secret.
  3. Students janken and the winner gets to start the dialogue.
    • "Whats your name?"
    • "My name is ______."
    • "What can I call you?"
    • "You can call me ______."
  4. The winner writes the name and nickname of their friend on their worksheet and has the loser to sign.
  5. Students then move on to next person.
  6. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • If you have a lively class you may not need the identity cards you can just use the actual students names and nicknames. In my experience though the kids rarely had nicknames or if they did were too shy to say anything.

Cautions:

  • Kids might just sign without speaking.  If you see this, hit them.
