Calvin Did

GRAMMAR: Verb: Past Tense     EXAMPLE: Did Calvin study yesterday?  Yes, he did.     DATE ADDED: 02-09-09

15-30 min.

Brief Outline: Students practice writing five simple past tense questions, and then ask their friends a series of questions while following their navigating their way through a Calvin & Hobbes maze.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Hand out the worksheet and have each student write 5 'Did you ~ ?' on the back of their worksheets.  Once they finish, they transcribe their questions into the blank area of the Calvin & Hobbes maze.
  2. Once all the students have finished this task, have them pair off and play Janken, and the winner goes through the maze asking their partner 'Did you ~ ?' questions.  The partner must answer truthfully.
  3. Once they reach a point value, they flip the worksheet over, write their partner's name and the point value.  Then, they reverse roles and the prodcedure is repeated again.
  4. Once both students have run through the maze, they go find another partner and repeat the activity again.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • There are a lot of squares for students' names and points, but you don't need to use all of them.  You can shorten the number of squares students must fill out, based upon how much time there is and/or how much the students are enjoying the activity,
