Brief Outline: Students create simple conversations, focusing on the helping verb 'can'. While this worksheet was originally designed for the New Horizon series, it can easily be adapted to fit any of the JHS textbooks.
Materials Needed:
Detailed Explanation:
After you teach the students the target dialogue, hand out the worksheet and let the students fill it out. They
can use the examples given in the worksheet or make up their own 'free-speech' conversation.
If time allows and if you have the right classroom environment, have volunteers present their conversations.
Teaching Suggestions: At my JHS we used this worksheet as a reading/speaking test. It worked really well. The students had a lot of fun creating their own conversations.
My school likes to test the students a lot, forcing them to memorise things quickly. I found that this activity worked well.
This might be a good time to remind the students of President Obama's speech, "Yes, we can!" and challenge them to work the phrase into their 'canversation'.
