Brief Outline: Using "The best..., The most..., and The ~est..." construction, students choose among their classmates to see who should get the title.
Materials Needed:
Detailed Explanation:
- Students create or are given a number of categories - Most Likely to Become Famous, Funniest, Best Athlete - and they pick one girl and one boy from their class who they think is most deserving of the title. Similar to an American high school yearbook.
- Don't forget to tally up the votes and have a mini certificate or something for the winners.
Variations:
- This activity can be done as either a reading/writing activity or a speaking/listening activity.
- As a reading/writing activity, students will need a worksheet they fill out with their classmates' names for each category.
- As a listening/speaking activity, using the category list ask the students to nominate each other.
Teaching Suggestions:
- If you have one of your own yearbooks available bring it in when you do this lesson. It's an interesting way to show differences between school in your home country and in Japan. It also shows that this kind of activity is actually done in schools.
Tips/Cautions:
- Even though this activity covers grammar from grade 2, it's a fun end-of-the-year activity for 3rd year students just before they graduate. If you get the chance to do this with this 3rd years, save some time in class to teach some phrases usually written in yearbooks: "Keep in touch!", "Best friends forever!", etc.
