Brief Outline: Three crossword puzzles per semester, covering almost all the vocabulary from the New Horizon textbooks. Students must translate and fill in the blanks to finish.

Materials Needed:

  • Choose from the below worksheets. Each worksheet contains 3 crosswords; nouns, verbs and other.

NewHorizon1 Units1-6

NewHorizon1 Units7-11

NewHorizon2 Units1-4

NewHorizon2 Units5-7

NewHorizon3 Units1-3

NewHorizon3 Units4-6

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After handing out one of the crosswords (verbs, nouns, etc.), have the sudents: A.) Translate from English to Japanese, B.) Translate from Japanese to English and C.) Fill-in-the-blanks.
  2. Use your own judgement to decide if and when to allow textbooks (e.g. 5-10 minutes in). Aim to have students recall as much as they can but keep in mind that it is better for them to look up a comletely forgotten word than waste five minutes stressing about it.
  3. Repeat from Step 1 with another crossword worksheet.

Variations:

  • For vocabulary from the Sunshine textbook, see Jesse Noble`s Review Crossword (Sunshine).

Teaching Suggestions:

  • I have been selective in the words I excluded. I have excluded most words which are almost the same in Japanese as they are in English. I have also excluded some words which most students already know from elementary school (Japan, weather, time etc...)
  • For lower-level classes:
    • Allow students to use textbooks earlier.
    • Allow students to work in pairs.
    • Fill in a few letters in the crossword before class.
    • Tell students the page number where they can find fill-in-the-blank sentence structures. NOTE: Pages are listed in the answer key.

  • (Jan 18, 2012) Gwatt said: This is great and a good starting point, but I would adjust the clues to your students levels.
Also there is a mistake in the NewHorizon3 Units 1-3 VERBS worksheet: Down clue 8 and Down clue 14 need to be SWAPPED. It is a mistake and the crossword can't be finished.
Also "Down 1" answer "lives" isn't a verb as it is used in the sentence - it's a noun and pronounced differently. So it is a little misleading for the students.
  • (Nov 4, 2011) Ashley Alexander said: Sorry! I made a mistake before... the 2nd year Unit 4 worksheet would be good as a year end sheet but it needs tweaking because If and when are Unit 5 grammar points and the reduced relative clause isn't taught until mid year in 3rd year JHS.
Moral of the story... make sure that your students recognize all of the grammar points before you send it out!
  • (Oct 28, 2011) Ashley Alexander said: I'm commenting specifically about the second year Unit 1-4 crossword since that's the one I printed and looked at... but it has a problem of using third year grammar points!
If, when (as in time ie when I was a jhs student), and the reduced relative clause (I have a job selling hotdogs...) so if you plan on using those sheets please be careful to change those and to make sure that the grammar points are things that they're covered.
  • (July 14, 2011) Oh said: This is a great worksheet.  I'm in Fukushima and we are a little behind because of...well you know...so we are only through 5 I think, but I let them use the book a little and they manage.
  • (Mar 18, 2011) Adam said: Thanks a lot for this activity, it has saved me so many times from dreaded "surprise last minute" classes! I have managed to use it with both small and large classes and would recommend to anyone to use it as a review activity!
  • (Feb 23, 2011) Anonymous said: Great activity! I have a small class (this time, 3 of 4) and I just split the sheets between them (one had nouns, one had adj, the other had verbs) and it took up the entire 50 minutes. Great review!
