Brief Outline: This activity contains three crosswords reviewing most vocabulary for the second half of the first grade's year.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. After handing out one of the crossword worksheets (adjective, noun, etc.), have the sudents: A.) Translate from English to Japanese, B.) Translate from Japanese to English, or C.) Fill-in-the-blank.
  2. Use your own judgement to decide if and when to allow textbooks (e.g. 5-10 minutes in). Aim to have students recall as much as they can but keep in mind that it is better for them to look up a comletely forgotten word than waste five minutes stressing about it.
  3. Repeat from Step 1 with another crossword worksheet.

Variations:

  • For first year Units 1-6, Englipedia`s Crossword Challenge 01 (New Horizon).
  • For second/third year, see Jesse Noble`s Review Crossword (Sunshine).
  • For lower level classes:
    • Allow students to work in pairs.
    • Give out hints such as the page number hints in the answer keys.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • This lesson was built with the New Horizon English textbook series in mind but can easily be used with other JHS English textbooks, seeing that most textbooks contain the same vocabulary words.
  • For lower-level classes:
    • Allow students to use textbooks earlier.
    • Fill in a few letters in the crossword before class.
    • Tell students the page number where they can find fill-in-the-blank sentence structures. NOTE: Pages are listed in the answer key.

Comments:

  • (Feb 23, 2011) Anonymous said: Great activity! I have a small class (this time, 3 of 4) and I just split the sheets between them (one had nouns, one had adj, the other had verbs) and it took up the entire 50 minutes. Great review!
