Brief Outline: Students listen to, learn, and use phrases often used in diaries.

Materials Needed:

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Students listen to the ALT describes Rie's day, and circle the picture that best describes what she is doing at that time. For example, "At 7 o'clock, Rie got up. At lunch break, she read a book. After school, she played tennis. In the evening, she watched T.V."
  2. In part 2 of the worksheet, students change the English phrases to the Japanese equivalent:
    • At 8 o'clock AM, 午前8時に
    • At 10 o'clock PM, 午後10時
    • In the morning, 午前中/朝に
    • In the afternoon, 昼に
    • After school, 放課後

    • After dinner, 晩ご飯の後

    • Before school, 学校に来る前・登校前

    • Before class, クラスの前

  3. After changing the words, the ALT reads each phrase. The students repeat.

  4. In part 3 of the worksheet, students look at how to write a diary in three simple steps:

    • Write the date.

    • Write what you did.

    • Write how you felt about what you did.

  5. Finally, part 4 of the worksheet, students try their own hand at writing a diary entry.  At the bottom of the page there is a word bank to help students who can't think of anything to write.
