Brief Outline: Students try to find a murderer.
Materials Needed:
Detailed Explanation:
- After dividing the students into groups of six, give each student an identity card. This card tells them who they are, what they were doing at 8:00pm last night, and who was with them. Tell them to memorize the information and put the card into their textbook.
- Practice the target sentences as a class:
- Who are you? I am ____.
- What were you doing at 8:00pm last night? I was ____ING.
- Were you ____ING alone? Yes, I was. / No, I was not. I was ____ING with ____.
- Then, give out a worksheet to each student.
- Now, the students ask each member of their group the above questions. They must find out the names of the other guests in the hotel, what each person was doing, and who they were with. They write this information in the space provided on the worksheet.
- After all students in the group have collected the information, they read the murder scene that is written on the worksheet and study the information they collected to determine who the murderer is. (Hint: the murder is Tom.)
Variations:
- Instead of breaking the class into groups, if you feel motivated enough, you could create a character card for each student in your class. However, keep in mind that this game becomes infinitely more complicated the more characters you add.

(June 2, 2011) Diana said: I tried this game, and even modified the worksheet to make it easier, but it was still wayyy too hard for my 2 nensei students. Also I am using the Sunshine books, and they have not learned the word "alone" yet, so that was hard too. Good idea, and maybe it would work better with students who are at a higher level.
