Brief Outline:  Students practice saying numbers by simply throwing dice.

Materials Needed

  • 2-6 dice - big soft dice from 100-yen shop are best

Detailed Explanation:

  1. Split the class into teams of 4-6 students.
  2. Have one student from each team come to the front.  You/JTE throw the dice and the first student to raise their hand and give the correct answer, receives a point for their team.

Variations:

  • I often start with just 2 dice and gradually add to them.
  • To practice a certain target numbers, start with a base number and throw the dice.  The students must add/subtract from the base number.
  • To practice really high numbers, have the students multiple each die to each other.  For example, if a 3, 5 and 6 were thrown, the answer would be 90.

Teaching Suggestions:

  • Throwing the dice on the floor can make it hard for all to see so I often actually have the dice together in my hands for them all to see and turn them over.
