Brief Outline: Triple O stands for
Odd One Out.
Students receive four vocabulary words. Once they figure which word doesn't belong, they write a 1-sentence reason to why they think that.
Materials Needed:
- TripleO worksheet: One copy for each student
Detailed Explanation:
Give each student a handout. Then read the four words aloud (found on the 3rd page, the teacher's sheet) and the students write down the words. One of the words is the "odd one out", meaning it doesn't match with the others in some way. There isn't a single correct answer so encourage your students to think creatively. As long as they can (logically) justify their reasoning then it's a right answer! They should write their answers down, preferable in a complete sentence. Then read out the next set of words.
Some suggested sets include:
fish, cat, dog, elephant
pencil, bag, peaches, books
Australia, America, Japan, U.K.
cheese, milk, yogurt, juice
Finally, have the students write their own "odd one out" examples. You can collect the papers and read them out lout and have the students guess the odd one out and the reason why.
Variations: - You can make this a warm-up by only having one or two "odd one out"s and skipping the writing activity.
- You can also do this activity without the handout. Instead, put up large pictures on the board and have the studnets guess out loud or work in groups to make it a competition.
