Brief Outline: Students work in pairs, groups or by themselves to put together a puzzle by connecting past tense questions to their appropriate past tense answers.
Materials Needed: Gridded worksheet: The worksheet includes a present tense activity AND past tense. The present tense is for the students to form an understanding about the activity before they do the real activity.
Detailed Explanation: Before class, print the attached files and cut into squares. Each student, pair or group should receive a complete set.
- The idea of this activity is for the students to match the questions to their appropriate answers.
- To explain how this activity works, I usually use math problems. Instead of having questions/answers on the sides of the squares, I write on the board math problems and answers in the form of squares and show the students how the squares sync up via problem/answer. Once they form a basic understanding, I hand out the present tense activity and the students practice putting the grid together.
- Finally, I hand out the actual past tense grid for the students to complete.
Variations: - Try adding a timer to the activity.
- If time allows or if some students/groups finish quickly, have them turn over grid and challenge them to make their own original gridded question/answer past tense puzzle.
Teaching Suggestions:
Depending on the level of the class, have the students work in pairs or by themselves.
Make a handout for yourself so that you can check the answers. You may want to make the cards more visible for yourself so you can check them quickly.
